SAT Summer Action Plan

“Summer time and the living is easy”, as one popular American Standard Song goes. Students settle into a much slower, relaxed, less pressurized routine than they are used to during the typical school year. The summer months are a great time to relax and decompress. It is also a great time to prepare for the SAT Exams that are scheduled for October and November 2008. Students have much more time in the summer to focus on this important exam without the pressure of studying for other exams. I recommend the following strategies that will effortlessly prepare any student who can set aside as little as one hour per day:
READ THE SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE SECTION- The Sunday Times Magazine articles are written at a level commensurate with the reading passages tested on the SAT. Circle all the words you don’t understand and look them up on dictionary dot com. Be sure to finish the entire magazine in a week. And then repeat the process next week. Doing this will build up vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills.
DO THE QUESTION OF THE DAY- The College Board is the company that administers the SAT. To have the Question of the Day sent directly to your email box visit collegeboard dot com. The questions are helpful and the explanations are a valuable learning tool.
DO PRACTICE EXAMS- The only proven way to improve your SAT Score is by doing practice tests. Lots of them! Buy The Official SAT Study Guide published by the College Board. The book contains 8 practice exams, sample essays and many great lessons and strategies about the SAT.
Remember one hour per day will yield approximately 75 hours of additional stress free study time! And at the same time this program will build up vocabulary, writing and math skills necessary for college. Don’t let your mind go to mush this summer. Stay focused and get the job done.
